Trans Stories / Trans Voices

By Kat La Mantia | March 2 2023 | AdultsChildren'sGeneralAllPop CultureBlog

The International Trans Day of Visibility, coming up on March 31, is a time to honor the accomplishments of trans and gender non-conforming people as well as to raise awareness about continuing struggles for equality. To be visible is to be seen, to be heard, and to be able to represent your own experience authentically and proudly. To be visible is to claim space for yourself, your community, and those who aren’t yet able to be visible themselves. Visibility is self-love. Visibility is radical. Visibility is only the first part of any story.

Celebrate trans joy and power at any age! This year, we highlight the voices of trans and gender non-confirming people in fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and more. Read about athletes, senators, activists, entertainers, and everyday people finding their way and finding community as they live life true to themselves.

I Am Jazz
978-0-8037-4107-2
The story of a transgender child based on the real-life experience of Jazz Jennings, who has become a spokesperson for transkids everywhere"This is an essential tool for parents and teachers to share with children whether those kids identify as trans or not. I wish I had had a book like this when I was a kid struggling with gender identity questions. I found it deeply moving in its simplicity and honesty."—Laverne Cox (who plays Sophia in “Orange Is the New Black”)From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl's brain in a boy's body. She loved pink and dressing up as a mermaid and didn't feel like herself in boys' clothing. This confused her family, until they took her to a doctor who said that Jazz was transgender and that she was born that way. Jazz's story is based on her real-life experience and she tells it in a simple, clear way that will be appreciated by picture book readers, their parents, and teachers.

Transgender Warriors
Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman
978-0-8070-7941-6
“The foundational text that gave me life-changing context, helping me to understand who I was and who came before me.”—Tourmaline, activist and filmmakerTransgender Warriors is an essential read for trans people of all ages who want to learn about the towering figures who have come before them—and for everyone who is part of the fight for trans liberationThis groundbreaking book—far ahead of its time when first published in 1996 and still galvanizing today—interweaves history, memoir, and gender studies to show that transgender people, far from being a modern phenomenon, have always existed and have exerted their influence throughout history. Leslie Feinberg—hirself a lifelong transgender revolutionary—reveals the origin of the check-one-box-only gender system and shows how zie found empowerment in the lives of transgender warriors around the world, from the Two Spirits of the Americas to the many genders of India, from the trans shamans of East Asia to the gender-bending Queen Nzinga of Angola, from Joan of Arc to Marsha P. Johnson and beyond. This book was published with two different covers. Customers will be shipped the book with one of the available covers.
