From the ocean’s depths to a boat’s deck to the spacecraft Voyager, join best-selling author Nicola Davies and award-winning illustrator Britta Teckentrup in celebrating the beauty and power of the humpback whale and its mysterious song.

The music of our aquatic neighbors, humpback whales, echoes through the ocean depths, stringing sounds together like beads on a necklace. With their whoops and wails, roars and whistles, the whales listen and learn, copying the distinctive patterns from one another—before making their own unique additions and spreading new songs across the seas. Follow the lyrical story of one whale’s spectacular song, at once mysterious and majestic, as it traverses the world’s oceans. A note from the author describes the first time she was able to hear the humpback song in the wild, while an end note offers further details on how the whales’ song is shared.
Nicola Davies is a zoologist and award-winning author whose many books for children include Surprising Sharks, illustrated by James Croft; Extreme Animals: The Toughest Creatures on Earth, illustrated by Neal Layton; and Gaia Warriors, which she coauthored with James Lovelock. She is also the author of several titles illustrated by Emily Sutton, including Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes; Many: The Diversity of Life on Earth; and Grow: Secrets of Our DNA. She lives in Wales.

Britta Teckentrup is an author and illustrator whose picture books have been published in more than twenty countries and include Where’s the Baby?, One Is Not a Pair, and Don’t Wake Up the Tiger. She is also the illustrator of The House by the Lake by Thomas Harding, which was long-listed for a Kate Greenaway Medal. She lives in Berlin with her family.
