The refined rooms of American philanthropist and aesthete Bunny Mellon (1910–2014)—interiors influential for their ability to combine magnificent collections of fine and decorative art with an ambiance of comfort and ease—were documented by artist Snowy Campbell, a lasting tribute to Mellon’s impeccable taste.

The houses of Mellon and her husband Paul have become icons in the field of interior decoration, filled with fine antiques, blue-chip works of art (a Van Gogh left unframed and propped on a mantel), personal mementos, and exquisite objets d’art, all displayed in Mellon’s inimitably sophisticated yet charming way. Campbell was employed by Mellon in 1970 for six years, just after college, to document in paint several residences of the Mellons—presented here as a group for the first time.

This book—a project that was started by Mellon but never realized until now—presents Campbell’s paintings that capture the colors, light, and ambiance of rooms and gardens, as well as intricate patterns and details of furnishings in spaces put together with help from renowned decorators John Fowler and Bruce Budd. Three residences—in New York City; Washington, DC; and Upperville, Virginia—are the focus, with texts by society chronicler James Reginato describing Mellon’s decorating style and the ways the Mellons used each property. Opening the doors to a life of superb connoisseurship, this volume is an homage to the interiors of a renowned couple and the extraordinary work of a young artist.
ELLE DECOR'S 17 New Design Books We're Reading This Spring: "In the early 1970s, a young artist named Snowy Campbell was hired by Bunny Mellon to paint watercolors of the Mellons’ residences in New York, Washington, and Upperville, Virginia. Those paintings (more than 100 of them!) sat unseen in the Oak Spring Garden Foundation library... until now. With texts by James Reginato, a foreword by Charlotte Moss, and a cameo from Frank Langella recounting how he met Bunny, this is a rare window into a legendarily private world."

MANSION GLOBAL's 7 Inspiring Design Books for Spring:
"Enter the world of Bunny Mellon, the philanthropist, decorative arts connoisseur and collector whose many homes and gardens set the standard with her love, knowledge, and support of design. One of the true original design influencers, Mellon, who died in 2014 at 103 years old, hired the watercolorist Snowy Campbell in the 1970s to document three of her homes in New York City, Washington, DC; and Upperville, Virginia. Over six years, Campbell produced more than 100 watercolors that were meant to be compiled in a book but never made it until now. In addition to the paintings, “The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon” ($60) interweaves stories that capture Mellon’s joie de vivre and joie de design. The story of how Bunny met Snowy told by the actor Frank Langella would not feel out of place in your favorite sitcom."

"American philanthropist, horticulturalist, and tastemaker Bunny Mellon has long influenced the way we decorate our homes and plan our gardens. Design lovers can now get an exclusive look at her residences with this book—a project that was started by Mellon before her passing—featuring paintings by Snowy Campbell that capture the ambiance of her rooms and gardens in a new light." — VERANDA.COM

"THE ENCHANTING INTERIORS OF BUNNY MELLON: PAINTINGS BY SNOWY CAMPBELL (FEBRUARY 2026, RIZZOLI) Few figures embodied cultivated joy quite like Bunny Mellon. This elegant volume opens the doors to the Mellons' residences in New York City; Washington, D.C.; and Upperville, Va., as captured between 1970 and 1976 by painter Snowy Campbell. Commissioned by Mellon but never realized until now, the paintings offer an intimate portrait of a life shaped by connoisseurship, restraint and beauty. Insightful texts by society chronicler James Reginato illuminate how the Mellons lived in and used each home, revealing joy as something rooted not in excess, but in daily rituals, tradition and thoughtful elegance." — MODERN LUXURY: INTERIORS

"Over the last half-century, the artist’s luminous paintings remained in the archives of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, on the Mellon estate in Virginia. This month, with the release of The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon: Paintings by Snowy Campbell (Rizzoli), they are published for the first time." — VANITY FAIR

"Mellon commissioned the paintings, which document in charming and remarkably precise detail the interiors of her New York City, Washington, DC, and Upperville, Virginia, homes, between 1970-1976. “It was a treasure trove,” says Collins, of the paintings, notes, and letters between Mellon and Campbell that formed the basis of The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon: Paintings by Snowy Campbell (Rizzoli, 2026), which showcases 90 paintings, mostly on full pages. “We showed them to a few designers, but when we showed them to Charlotte Moss, she said, ‘These have to be a book,’” adds Crane." — VERANDA

"A new book published by Rizzoli, The Enchanting Interiors of Bunny Mellon, pays tribute to Mellon’s homes in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Upperville, Virginia and the watercolor pictures of the rooms that the homes’ chatelaine commissioned from the artist Alison “Snowy” Campbell Swain. The project, according to a preface by Sir Peter Crane, the president of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, was initially dreamed up by Mellon and Swain more than half a century ago but never came to fruition—until now.
“When I was first shown the portfolio of Snowy’s watercolors, I knew a book must be in their future,” Charlotte Moss writes in a foreword. “In our digital age, when everything from basic supplies to luxury goods can be ordered online with the tap of a button, anything rendered by human hands has become infinitely more compelling, coveted, and cherished." — TOWN & COUNTRY
