Some picture books tell a story. Where Do Possibilities Live? invites readers to imagine their own—the story of who they are and who they might become. Written by New York Times bestselling author Kobi Yamada (What Do You Do With an Idea?) and illustrated by artist Juan Pablo Neira Zúñiga, this imaginative book encourages kids to ask the heart-stirring question, “Where do possibilities live?” and to embrace the wonder that comes from searching for the answer.

Where Do Possibilities Live? has always been the title for this book from the first moment it came to me,” says Yamada. “What I love is it immediately makes you wonder if possibilities live in a certain town. A special place. A faraway land. Everywhere and all around you. Or inside you.”

Throughout the pages, a young girl encounters the unexpected and the extraordinary—an elephant with butterfly wings, tortoises carrying entire cities on their shells, and animals enjoying a seated banquet beneath the trees. It’s a world where nothing is off limits, and an invitation to believe the same is true for you.

“This is a book for readers of all ages,” says Yamada. “Where Do Possibilities Live? is for anyone who has an adventurous spirit, an inquisitive mind, or an open heart and wonders about the possibilities for their own life. It’s a book of questions and ideas about expanding what’s possible.”

A book opened to a two-page spread of full bleed art. The setting is a bedroom with light filtering through the window. The figure of a girl is disappearing into a vast, unknown world that exists within a homemade blanket fort.

Exploring the pages feels like wandering the halls of the most magical, dreamlike art gallery. That’s because the book’s illustrator, Juan Pablo Neira Zúñiga, is a fine art painter who brings museum-quality artistry to every spread. Originally hand-painted in oils on canvas, each scene was photographed and reformatted to storybook size, preserving its intricate, fantastical details. The result is an immersive visual world that expands what a picture book can be.

A native of Chile, Zúñiga has been painting in oils since childhood, drawing inspiration from the colorful landscapes and natural beauty of his home country. His art is an invitation to embrace imagination and all its gifts.

Artist Juan Pablo Neira Zúñiga is depicted in his studio. He has a palette in his left hand and a paintbrush in his right. In the photo, he is painting the sky on a canvas painting that will eventually become an illustration in Where Do Possibilities Live? The scene involves a small girl in a red coat observing a family of polar bears floating on ice in the blue waters of a polar scene.

“I hope the illustrations will spark each reader’s imagination, transport them to magical places where anything is possible, and remind them to always try to see the world through the eyes of the child we all carry within us,” says Zúñiga.
